Economic Climate

In the past, the Italian economy was agriculturally based. Today, Italy has developed into an industrial country, becoming a member of the the European Union and the G8 group of industrialized countries. Some unique characteristics of Italy include the following:

  • Industrial sectors are concentrated in northern Italy.
  • Many precision industries exist in Italy.
  • Italy’s economic strength is primarily in small and medium-sized companies.
  • The processing and manufacturing of goods are major industries.
  • Many business are family-owned.
  • Italy has few natural resources.
  • Italy is the third largest producer of wine in the world.
  • Italy is a leading producer of olive oil, fruits, flowers and vegetables.
