Health

There is no nationwide system of government-operated medical facilities in the United States. Typically, health care is covered by private insurance coverage, altohough government assistance is available to the poor and elderly. Travelers either will have to pay for their healthcare or provide proof of insurance.

In general, if you have a medical emergency you should find the nearest hospital and go to its emergency room or dial 911. If the problem is not urgent, you can see a local physician, which typically is cheaper than a trip to the hospital’s emergency room.

Pharmacies are abundant in the U.S.; however, certain over-the-counter medications in other countries require a prescription in the U.S. Prescriptions can be expensive if you do not have insurance coverage.
